My Crush

Your Assignment Should You Choose to Accept
Welcome to another post inspired by Mama Kat’s writer’s workshop.
I got such wonderful feedback on my last post ER, that I’ve decided to keep this up. (Hear that Mama Kat – you have inspired me.)

Okay then. My topic of choice: “About my crush”.

*****

So it was the early 90’s in the days of newly found freedom, and lots of adventure. One of these freedoms was the ability to go to Panorama alone (aka without parents). Now I know I need to take a break here for the uninitiated, so I can explain Panorama.

Panorama is a huge celebration of the steel-pan – a musical instrument invented right here in Trinidad and now synonymous with “the sound of Caribbean beaches”. Without it, the Beach Boys Kokomo could be about any old sandy beach. But the laid back mellow sound of the steel-pan or steel-drum is not all that it’s known for. Steel orchestras have a special place in Trinidad’s Carnival celebrations. Each year, the best of the best steel orchestras will compete for the title of Panorama champions, and some of the best playoffs happen in the Savannah – a massive park in the capital city.

So when my Girls and I finally got to go to Panorama alone, it was just the best. Aside from the music, it was just a huge social gathering with lots of food and drink and friends! Imagine a massive fair centered on music where you are meeting friends at every turn, and making new ones as well. Can you say addicting? I was addicted to Panorama.

I went year after year. And year after year I would cross paths with this guy. Every year, we were bound to meet up in the same general area (North stand, top tier, western corner for you Trinis out there.) We would hang out for a bit, and talk about nothing in particular. And that would be that, for another year.

And I couldn’t understand how come I only ever saw him at Panorama. I mean we seemed to know the same people, but he was never at the same parties, or clubs, or at least I never saw him. And I used to wonder – where did he live? What did he do – was he in school or did he graduate already? And then I went away to college. And I couldn’t come back every year for Carnival. But when I was at home for Christmas, I would wonder. And when I graduated and went back home, I wondered. But not as often, after 4 years.

And then one day I saw him again. At one of my favourite haunts close to home. I’d walk over every so often and hang out, and one day I saw him. He didn’t seem to remember me. One day I got up the nerve to talk to him again, and he did remember me. (Or so he says – he may have been just being polite.) We ended up hanging out at a party together a few weeks later. (Yay for C’s birthday!) And then we went out again. (Yay for Carnival and great parties every week!) And then we were pretty much inseparable. Now 3 kids, and many years later, we’ve been inseparable ever since.
